A hollow stalk emerges from a tuber from which a stylised bud unfolds to form a spectacular flower in the shape of a trumpet – the Hippeastrum. This is an identical twin of Amaryllis and is often referred to by that name, as if the same plant has two names. The popular name of Amaryllis is actually Hippeastrum, a member of the Narcissus family. This is a seasonal flower, which is available mainly in months that have the letter R in their names, from September to and including April.
