Origins

Carnations have a long and rich history. As they originally came from the Mediterranean, it is no surprise to find that the Romans used them to make head wreaths and compacted the flowers to make perfume.

Renaissance artists in the 15th and 16th centuries always chose carnations to depict romantic scenes and you will often see them in religious paintings, both as a symbol of the holy Mary and of the suffering of Christ.

Bet you didn’t know that the word Dianthus means divine flower! It is derived from the Greek words Dios (God) and anthos (flower).
